The Renault R29 fails the crash tests!

The new Renault failed the mandatory FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) crash tests, Autosport magazine informs us today. The R29 reportedly failed two of the three crash tests conducted.

Without requiring the design of a new chassis, a spokesperson for the French brand reassured, confirming that the R29 will be present on the Portimao circuit in Algarve, Portugal next week. The new single-seater is to be presented to the press on January 19.

According to the British magazine’s sources, the frontal and side tests scored below the minimum mark. The chassis is allegedly to blame, but Renault claims the issue has already been identified and fixed.

“This is not unusual,” the spokesperson said. “We have easily identified and resolved the problem, so the car will be on track in Algarve on January 19 for testing, as planned.”

Problems in crash tests occur quite regularly, but are heightened this season, particularly due to changes in regulations. Indeed, with the introduction of the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), which is very heavy, engineers are forced to minimize the amount of material in a single-seater, thereby weakening the chassis.

Renault can nevertheless remain optimistic about the performance of its R29, despite its problems. The team with the Diamond had indeed experienced similar issues in 2005, before becoming world champion.
