Ferrari does not yet know if it will use its KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) for the start of the season even though the system was installed on the F60 for its first outing.
The Maranello team has openly declared that it is behind in the development of the KERS. A few weeks ago, Ferrari was even preparing a backup plan in case the system was not ready in time for the start of the season.
Speaking at the launch of the F60 in Mugello, Italy, team principal Stefano Domenicali admitted that his team needed evidence demonstrating the benefits of the KERS before supporting its introduction in racing.
« When we realize that the KERS meets our expectations, then it is our duty to use it. That’s our goal if we want to win the world championship, » announced the Italian.
The presentation of the F60 is important to us because it’s the first series of tests with the KERS on a track. I imagine that we will have to overcome problems, the typical problems related to a track. However, we will need to solve them one way or another.
The number of test kilometers is reduced, we are at 15,000 kms and there will be no tests during the season. We must therefore be as efficient as possible.
« The first objective to address is to have a car that is very reliable. Reliability did not work in our favor last season. The first objective is therefore to understand and measure the potential of the KERS and solve all the reliability issues, » he continued.
When asked if the KERS would be used during the Australian Grand Prix, Domenicali stated: « I can’t give a yes or no answer, because we need to measure the performance of the system. We will try to be ready as soon as possible. »
