Sébastien Buemi has no illusions about the difficulty of the task that a first season in Formula 1 represents. The Swiss will make his debut at the Australian Grand Prix in March, after being confirmed as one of the drivers for Scuderia Toro Rosso.
Although the driver he is replacing, Sebastian Vettel, won a race last year with this same team, Buemi does not expect the same kind of performance.
« You have to be realistic. You need to have self-confidence and know how to put yourself in the best possible situation. But you must also keep your feet on the ground and not get depressed if the results do not follow, » said the 20-year-old driver on the Italian team’s official website.
« It will be a difficult season and everyone in the team will work hard to make progress with the car in the most advanced discipline of motorsports. In the Formula category, if you do a good job then the results follow, but in F1, it’s not automatic. »
« Winning in F1 is very difficult, but at the same time, you can’t set a goal of finishing twelfth, that would be absurd. You have to set a high standard, but without exaggerating. I won’t be world champion in 2009! »
Buemi added that the name of his teammate mattered little to him and he had no preference: « For me, the important thing is to be in F1 and not knowing my teammate’s name doesn’t bother me.
« Of course, I want to beat him and be as competitive as possible. Maybe if he has a lot of experience, I can learn and progress more quickly by watching him. »
« Before the Australian Grand Prix, it is difficult to set objectives as there will undoubtedly be many surprises at the start of the season. The team wants to do as well as in 2008, but it will be challenging. Personally, I hope to be faster than my teammate, » he concluded.
