A French person in the RDD 2009 promotion of Renault

Three drivers make up the RDD 2009 class and will carry Renault’s colors in the GP2 Series, World Series by Renault, and in Formula Renault 2.0.

Since 2002, the Renault Driver Development Program aims to discover new talents in motor racing and train them for the demanding profession of professional driver. After taking Romain Grosjean under its wing in 2006, Renault first supported him towards his F3 Euroseries Champion title in 2007, then towards the GP2 Asia Series Champion title a few months later before entrusting him with the role of third driver for the official team.

The RDD Program is focusing this season on three young drivers whose talent and ambitions will be showcased in the GP2 Series, World Series by Renault, and FR 2.0.

Charles Pic – French – 18 years old:

In a very short time, Charles has established himself as a great hope for French motorsport. After finishing third in the Formule Campus, then achieving the same placement the following season in the Eurocup, he entered the WSR 3.5L Championship in 2008. He won at Le Mans and Monaco and added 4 podiums to his record, ultimately finishing sixth in the drivers’ standings and being crowned best rookie once again. This season, Charles will aim for the title in this same category under the colors of the Tech 1 Racing team.

« I am delighted to be part of the Renault family. What could be better for a Frenchman who aims to reach the highest level of competition? Last season, I proved that I could be fast despite my lack of experience. I learned from my mistakes and thanks to the RDD, I will be stronger this year. My sole objective will be the title. »

Davide Valsecchi – Italian – 22 years old:

In 2008, during his first season in the GP2 Series, the young Italian demonstrated determination and showed an impressive progression curve. Eighth in the GP2 Asia Series, Davide was then involved in a severe accident during the second round of the GP2 Series in Turkey. He missed six races while recovering, but fought hard to finish his season well and won the last European event on home soil in Monza, Italy. Registered again in the GP2 Series with Durango, Davide also participated in the 08-09 GP2 Asia Series and was third in the championship after two rounds and a victory in Shanghai.

« It’s a real opportunity for me to be part of the RDD. Through this program, I hope to improve physically and mentally to be even stronger this season and be able to fight in the lead pack.

Marco Sorensen – Danish – 18 years old:

The youngest member of this year’s class comes from the English Formula Ford championship. Midway through last season, Marco also participated in the ADAC Formula Master and, although he only raced in half of the championship, he secured 5 pole positions, 4 victories, and 2 podiums, making him the most successful driver of the season. Fast and consistently improving, the Danish driver will compete in both the Eurocup and the Nordic FR 2.0 Championship.

« It’s truly fantastic to be part of the RDD Program! I know there are very few selected and I’m really proud that Renault chose me. It’s the opportunity for me to focus 100% on my job as a driver. »

The RDD Program was created in 2002 by Renault F1 Team. During a season, the selected drivers must realize their potential on the track in their championship, but also demonstrate great athletic qualities under the guidance of a physical trainer dedicated to their performance and progression. RDD drivers must also be able to represent the Renault brand internationally. The RDD program is recognized as selective, rigorous, and effective.
