Takuma Sato doesn’t want to believe that the time for retirement has come for him, even if he is not the new Toro Rosso driver.
The Japanese driver was in the final sprint against Sébastien Bourdais for the second race seat in 2009. He had nonetheless impressed the Italian team during the winter tests.
However, the Japanese and his team were not able to raise the necessary sponsorship level to secure the seat.
Although disappointed despite himself, Sato does not give up on Formula 1.
« I’m not sure about my future. I will discuss the upcoming steps in my career with my manager. However, I think I still have a lot to do and a lot to give in F1. »
« I am determined to stay in high-level motorsport, and I will be fully focused on a return to F1. I want to thank all my fans who have been absolutely fantastic in their loyalty. I will remember these special relationships we have built, and I hope that one day I can make up for this dedication, » he explained.
The manager of Sato, Andrew Gilbert-Scott, also expressed his disappointment with Toro Rosso’s decision. He believes that money rather than the driver’s abilities is behind the final decision.
« I am extremely disappointed that Scuderia Toro Rosso did not choose Takuma for 2009. »
« Taku demonstrated great motivation and showcased all his talent during the three test sessions he participated in. He was faster than Bourdais, » he acknowledged.
Unfortunately, the team has never hidden the fact that it needed funding to secure its future. We all worked very hard attracting a significant number of sponsors willing to support the team, but unfortunately, it was not enough to secure the place.
We would like to thank our loyal and new sponsors and the many fans of Takuma. We will now look for a new opportunity to showcase all of Takuma Sato’s qualities in Formula 1.
