Here are the first images of the new 2009-style Red Bull F1: The RB5.
In the video below, Sebastian Vettel, the new Red Bull driver, explains the main points of the new 2009 regulations.
Computer-generated images are used to better understand aerodynamic evolution, as well as the KERS system employed from the Australian GP on several single-seaters.
We thus find the overall shapes of the future RB5 as well as the lighter colors of the new Red Bull.
Here is the detailed comment from Vettel in French:
In 2009, these are the biggest regulation changes in the history of Formula 1. They involve aerodynamics and propulsion systems, but we continue to drive cars!
Here is what the single-seaters looked like in 2008. The front wing is now lower and wider.
No more shark gills and aerodynamic appendages. Everything is redesigned smoothly.
The inclination of the supports on the front wing increases by 6 degrees, and the nose is much longer. The rear wing is narrower and taller than before! All of this reduces grip but increases aerodynamic drag behind the cars, thereby enhancing overtaking opportunities! (Enhanced slipstream effect).
The engine limit has been reduced this year from 19,000 rpm to 18,000 rpm, and we will only have 8 engines for the entire 2009 season. We can use them from the first Grand Prix to the last, and some engines will have to last for three Grand Prix instead of two as last year.
It will be very interesting to see which teams will use KERS: the kinetic energy recovery system; it is generated from braking. It is converted into electrical energy by the generator (ECU) and charges batteries.
With Boost, we have 6.5 seconds of extra power and 82Nm of additional torque! We can use it only once until the next braking.
If you trigger it too late and brake with the boost, you’re guaranteed to spin out!
After 11 years, slick tires make a comeback! No grooves, better grip, and much more fun to drive!
Finally, this year, the driver has even more influence over his car! We must do the right thing, at the right time!
