Night will not fall on Sepang before 2015!

The directors of the Sepang Grand Prix in Malaysia have ruled out the possibility of turning the event into a night race before the end of the current contract, which expires in 2015.

The start time of the race has been moved to 5 p.m. this year. The organizers cited the rising costs as the reason for not lighting the track.

And although Bernie Ecclestone wants to see the Sepang Grand Prix held at night, race directors have now confirmed that the start will be at 5 p.m. at least until 2015.

Mokhzani Mahathir, track chief at Sepang, told AFP news agency: « We have modified the contract. The race will start at 5 PM. It’s another way of saying there will be no night race before 2015. »

Mahathir added that organizing a night race was more than difficult in a crisis context.

« Bernie told me that we could have raised the issue. I told him that we are facing an economic crisis. A night race will not attract more people to the circuit. »
