Giancarlo Fisichella says he is very pleasantly surprised by the first laps of the new Force India VJM02, which just made its debut yesterday in Jerez, Spain.

Even though the first outing of the single-seater, or at least its first official one (Force India had conducted a shakedown at Silverstone last week), was marked by mechanical troubles, Fisichella believes that the 2009 car is much better than last year’s. According to him, he can only be optimistic about its potential.

“It’s a bit frustrating to have only completed 31 laps today. It’s important to cover as many kilometers as possible because we are already behind compared to the other teams,” Fisichella said.

« I am, however, very surprised and happy with what I felt today behind the wheel of the car. Everything is very promising and I felt much more coherence, even in the braking, and much more stability in high-speed corners. »

« We need to improve the level of oversteer. The lap time is good and I am also very happy with the tires. »

« I hope that today, I can do more laps with the aim of improving the car by focusing more on reliability. »

Fisichella will hand over to his teammate Adrian Sutil tomorrow, Tuesday.
