Vijay Mallya revealed that he approved of Mercedes-Benz powering the Honda Racing cars for this year.
The regulations of Formula 1 do not allow a manufacturer to supply engines to more than two teams other than their own without the full consent of the FIA. Mallya, in theory, could have blocked initiatives aimed at sharing his 2009 engine with any team other than McLaren.
However, since Jerez, Mallya stated on Monday that he would not cause a scandal because it was in the interest of the sport for Honda Racing to have its chance of survival.
« The FIA rules state that an engine can only be supplied to two teams. As for Mercedes, it’s McLaren and Force India. I think it would be fair for Mercedes to supply engines to the former Honda team to keep it on the grid without wasting time on paperwork, » indicated the Indian.
« I might have objections, but I have chosen not to express them because I want what is best for F1. No one likes to see a team disappear. Unfortunately, we already had the Super Aguri case last year. »
Mallya added that the spirit of cooperation he demonstrates in this matter shows how teams must work together to shape the future of F1.
« I believe that in 2010, costs can be significantly reduced. If the costs are brought down to an acceptable level, which is what Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone want to do, there will be even more teams. There should be 24 cars to assert that the sport is doing well. »
