Mosley: « Formula 1 is becoming ridiculous »

The president of the FIA, Max Mosley, has criticized the current state of Formula 1, arguing that the sport has a culture of waste, so costs must be rectified to ensure the future of Formula 1.

« The efforts for success have exceeded all kinds of financial discipline. Formula 1 is becoming more and more ridiculous, » explained Mosley to the German newspaper Spiegel.

He warned the teams that car manufacturers could find themselves in the same position as Honda and its withdrawal from Formula 1 if the increase in operating costs is not challenged in the immediate future.

He continued: « Maybe we (the FIA members) could reverse the trend by proposing free technical development while imposing budget limits. »

Mosley also warned that with Daimler’s shares at their lowest and Renault’s just above ten euros, job cuts in major teams are increasingly possible.

« What happens when people have to be laid off? Can we still justify investing so much money in Formula 1? » He wonders.

« No one can rule out the possibility of a fax landing on a racing team’s desk from the head office saying: Sorry, but that’s how it is. »
