The Formula 1 team, Toyota, is facing unprecedented budget cuts this season due to the financial difficulties faced by the Japanese car manufacturer.
Such is the revelation from the team principal Tadashi Yamashina, who stated to the news agency Reuters that he has never seen such cost reductions from his company.
« Our Formula 1 budget has been significantly reduced from its initial amount. Significant cuts were made following the announcement of Honda’s withdrawal. Furthermore, Toyota’s annual results in 2008 are particularly poor due to the crisis. »
« I am not in a position to state a figure on this reduction, but since I joined Toyota, I have never seen such reductions, » continued Yamashina.
Toyota President John Howett reiterated earlier this season the team’s interest in securing its first victory in 2009. This is almost vital for the Japanese manufacturer.
Yamashina also confirmed that good on-track performances, possible in light of the winter tests, are vital.
« Winning and achieving good results are very important. »
