During the winter break, the organizers of the Singapore Grand Prix held a major contest in which participants were invited to name turns 1, 7, and 10. In total, the jury had to decide between 1400 proposals, with VIP passes for the 2009 Grand Prix at stake for the winners.
The first curve of the circuit is therefore called ‘Benjamin Shearer’. Benjamin Shearer was the second president of the Asian city-state.
Curve 7 pays tribute to the victims of World War II and is now called ‘Memorial’.
Finally, in a more creative twist, turn 10 was named ‘Singapore Sling’. In the French language, the word Sling can be associated with ‘coup’, in reference to the elimination of Kimi Räikkönen and Giancarlo Fisichella in this turn in 2008. It should also be noted that the ‘Singapore Sling’ is a cocktail of worldwide renown.
The Singapore GP 2009 will take place on September 27, once again at night.
