The Spanish oil company Repsol expressed interest in a future return to Formula 1, particularly with the young driver Jaime Alguersuari, according to the sports newspaper Marca.
Repsol is said to have signed an agreement with the 19-year-old Spaniard, who won the highly competitive British F3 Championship last year and has already completed a few laps in F1 last year at the wheel of the Red Bull.
Jaime Alguersuari, who is talked about as Alonso’s successor, is highly regarded in the Red Bull junior driver program; it is with the support of the Austrian company and Repsol that the Spaniard will compete in the 2009 World Series by Renault.
Arturo Sus, in charge of sports partnerships at Repsol, announced that MotoGP was still the championship on which the Spanish company is focusing, but he quickly admitted the commitment with Alguersuari.
According to some sources cited by Marca, both Repsol and Red Bull are very eager to bring the young driver to F1 as soon as possible.
It is worth recalling that Sebastian Vettel, a young driver in the Red Bull program, also competed in the World Series by Renault in 2007 before transitioning to F1 mid-season.
