Bernie Ecclestone recently stated that Formula 1 could return to the United States in the near future but not at the ‘Indianapolis Motor Speedway’.

After an eight-year hiatus, F1 returned to the United States in 2000 in Indianapolis on a track that incorporated part of the legendary oval. But only two years after this ‘reconciliation’, negotiations with Bernie Ecclestone for the extension of the contract failed.

Ecclestone revealed that the USA could be back on the calendar as early as 2011, but then another circuit will need to be found.

« I would like to have 20 races in the calendar, but it’s a big job to convince the teams, » stated the F1’s chief financial officer, aged 78.

« We have India in 2010, Korea is building a circuit and we are in discussions with Russia. »

« The United States is also on the right track, but we will not return to Indianapolis. »

The FOTA had also expressed its determination to work towards bringing F1 back to American soil, supported notably by the probable arrival in 2010 of the USGPE team (formerly USF1).
