Hamilton will start last in the 2009 Australian GP

McLaren announced a few minutes ago that they need to change the gearbox on Lewis Hamilton’s car. The Briton will start last tomorrow for the start of the first Grand Prix of the 2009 season, in Melbourne, Australia.

Lewis Hamilton was unable to take part in the second part of qualifying on Saturday due to mechanical reasons. The McLaren driver had encountered issues during his last flying lap in Q1 and, upon returning to his pit, was unable to go back out. This mishap cost him the 15th place on the starting grid.

Ultimately, the team decided to completely change the gearbox of the reigning world champion. The regulations are strict, a 5-place penalty is mandatory.

« We could have solved the problem by changing only one part of the gearbox, but as a precaution, we will replace it completely. » Confirms Martin Withmarsh.

The regulation stipulates that a gearbox must last four races and that a penalty is given only in the case of a complete replacement.
