The reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton could well gain a place and step onto the podium for this Australian Grand Prix. The reason is that Jarno Trulli (currently 3rd in the race) has been summoned by the race stewards to address an incident that occurred during the second safety car intervention.
The McLaren team, through its team principal Martin Whitmarsh, confirmed that the FIA was investigating Trulli and the manufacturer Toyota. The Italian driver lost control of his car during the Safety Car intervention while Lewis Hamilton was nearby.
« There is a debate about whether the third place goes to Trulli or to Hamilton, » said Whitmarsh to the BBC.
The problem is as follows: Jarno Trulli, hindered by the wear on his tires, went off into the grass; behind him was Lewis Hamilton, who got ahead, but afterwards the Italian overtook the Briton, all of this under the safety car.
Whitmarsh added that he found it hard to believe in a podium finish for Hamilton given that the world champion started from the very back of the grid.
