According to the latest rumors from the Albert Park circuit, at least five teams are already paying close attention to a new diffuser similar to Brawn GP’s. The teams quickly packed up and took off for Malaysia.
The appeal against the decision of the race stewards who ruled in favor of the diffusers used by Brawn GP, Williams, and Toyota will not be heard in Paris until next month. However, rumors suggest that BMW, Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, and Renault are already bracing for a negative outcome…
« For us, it is not really possible to copy it because we cannot modify just about anything on our single-seater with just a turn of a screwdriver, » stated Nick Heidfeld from BMW to the German news agency SID.
Christian Horner from Red Bull added: « The repercussions of a new diffuser could impact the entire rear part of the car, which would obviously entail enormous costs. »
Whispers indicates that the McLaren team is quite advanced in the design of a new diffuser, and the Spanish newspaper Marca announces that Renault boss Flavio Briatore, despite his anger, is also considering the issue.
The sports journal claims that Ferrari is also under consideration as Fernando Alonso might try a new diffuser as early as the Chinese Grand Prix in mid-April.
« What’s happening with the broadcasters is stupid because it forces teams to spend money in times of crisis, » highlighted Briatore, still as upset as ever.
« It is also a matter of safety: we have already integrated parts of our wind tunnel, and it provides 14% more downforce. This is not in the spirit of the regulations. Once this diffuser is perfected, we could be talking about 30 to 40% additional downforce, » adds Briatore.
Christian Horner also spoke on the subject, announcing that a ‘double diffuser’ had been studied as early as the winter testing weeks.
« The issue of the broadcaster opens a path of development that had not been previously explored. It could be a significant performance gain, » added the Briton.
