BMW-Sauber has confirmed that Nick Heidfeld will indeed use the KERS for this new race in Malaysia.
The team from Hinwil was very hesitant about whether there would be a significant advantage for Heidfeld to use the system in Sepang. Several simulations showed that it would offer little advantage in terms of lap times.
However, after a night of analyzing the data retrieved on Friday from the practice sessions where Heidfeld ran with and without the device, the team decided to use it.
Willy Rampf, technical coordinator at BMW, stated that the team concluded that using KERS would bring great advantages in the race.
« We believe it will bring a strategic advantage for Nick. In addition to offering speed on the straights, there is a good chance of gaining positions on the starting grid. »
Heidfeld’s teammate, Robert Kubica, will not have it because its installation causes complications in the weight distribution of his F1.09.
