Nick Heidfeld was on track to score two points with two laps to go in the Grand Prix. The German then experienced mechanical problems caused by carbon debris. He only finished 12th.
Adrian Sutil experienced a violent accident after losing control of his single-seater. The German destroyed the Force India, leaving carbon debris all over the track. Nick Heidfeld passed right behind Sutil and picked up some pieces. Stuck in his single-seater, Heidfeld was losing several seconds per lap compared to his competitors. He thus lost four places in two laps.
« I drove through Sutil’s debris and I think I hit a wheel he lost. Then, the car behaved really strangely and I lost many positions. »
Heidfeld had already been hit earlier in the Grand Prix by Timo Glock, which did not improve the situation for the German: « Already on lap 13, I had a collision with Glock and it wasn’t very good for the car… at least I was able to finish the race. »
