Just like his teammate Fernando Alonso a week ago in China, Nelson Piquet might also experience new sensations on the track in Bahrain. Indeed, his R29 will be equipped with a new diffuser similar to those of Brawn GP, Toyota, or Williams.
This element will undoubtedly help him find the confidence needed for this weekend on a circuit he doesn’t necessarily like, allowing him to achieve a good performance. Because there is urgency if he doesn’t want to jeopardize his chances of staying with Renault…
Nelson [Piquet], another race in the rain and another difficult weekend for you and the team…
Yes, after the race in heavy rain in Malaysia, I was hoping for a rain-free weekend, and when it started raining before the race, I knew it was going to be difficult. Visibility was poor, and there was constant aquaplaning, and I damaged the car. The result is therefore disappointing, but I hope to put this weekend behind me and be able to fight in Bahrain, where we will have new parts on my car.
Is it a circuit that you enjoy?
« To be honest, it is not one of my favorite circuits but some parts are interesting like corners 5 and 6. There will be quite a bit of dust on the track and you just have to make sure to stay on the clean part of the track and try not to make mistakes. We are returning to a hot climate that will be challenging for the drivers. However, the heat will be dry, unlike the constant humidity of Malaysia.
What are your goals this weekend?
« A good result in qualifying is necessary in order to be able to choose a good race strategy. And if the new parts are installed on my car in time, I think I can reach Q3, putting me in a good position to score my first points of the season. The team is working hard on developing the car and I am confident that we will be more competitive in Bahrain and I will make the most of every opportunity. »
