McLaren was heard today at the FIA World Council held today, Wednesday, in Paris. Ultimately, the decision was not to penalize the McLaren team following the collaboration of the Woking team. McLaren faced a potential three-race suspension.
Following the lying scandal after the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, the team had been disqualified in Melbourne and was to be heard in a special hearing that day. Since then, Lewis Hamilton and Martin Whitmarsh, on behalf of McLaren, had publicly apologized.
The FIA provided some information via a statement: « Taking into account the honest and open manner in which McLaren’s director, Martin Whitmarsh, addressed the FIA’s world council and the ‘culture’ change he clearly spoke about for his team, the world council decided not to apply the penalty that seemed appropriate for this case. »
« This penalty is a suspension for the team from three races in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. It will be applied if further infractions arise or if, within the next 12 months, there is another violation by the team of article 151c of the International Sporting Code. »
