Spanish GP: Alonso aims for big points for his Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso is eager to show his best performances to his audience. The Spaniard is aware that it won’t be easy to fight for a podium finish, but his goal is to score points for his Grand Prix, on the Catalunya circuit.

Even though the team has already completed a large number of kilometers on the Catalunya circuit, Alonso believes that there is a lot of work to be done during the three practice sessions.

Fernando [Alonso], the Bahrain race was challenging for you, and yet you still scored a point…

« Yes, the water pump did not work during the race; so I was a bit dehydrated when I got out of the car. Scoring a point is good, but we were expecting better after all the efforts put in over the last two weeks. I didn’t get a good start and lost quite a few places, which was decisive for my race because all the cars around me had a similar strategy to mine. I think it’s fair to say that we were the eighth fastest car on the grid. Finishing the race in eighth place is therefore quite representative of our current performance. »

You’re getting ready to compete in your national Grand Prix. Is this a special moment for you?

« It’s always very special to race in Spain and I’m lucky to have two home races this year, one in Barcelona and the other in Valencia. The support from the fans always gives me a boost, and I hope to make them very happy but also give my all so they have a great weekend. It will be difficult to fight for the podium, but we hope for a good position in qualifying and to score big points for the race. »

Tell us about the Barcelona circuit and the performance level expected from the R29 on this track.

« All the teams know this circuit very well due to the numerous winter tests that take place there. We tested here in February, but obviously, we have developed the car since then, so we have to work very hard on the setup during the three free practice sessions. We are still lacking in performance at the moment, but the team has really improved the car this season in the right direction. We hope to make another step forward this weekend. »
