The very unpopular system of awarding the world driver’s championship title to the winner of the most races has been removed from the 2010 sporting regulations.
Following a World Motor Sport Council meeting held shortly before the start of the season, the FIA had published the rules for the following year, and Article 6.1 in the sporting regulations specified that « the driver title will be awarded to the driver who has won the most races. »
The FIA had attempted to implement the system proposed by Bernie Ecclestone, but it was vetoed by FOTA, after being heavily criticized by stakeholders in the paddock and even beyond.
From now on, after the world council of last April 29, the article now explains that the driver title will be awarded to the driver who has scored the most points.
