Assessment: Toyota very far from its expectations in racing

For the first time this season, no Toyota scored any points in the race. Despite slightly lower grid positions, the Japanese manufacturer was relying on its strategy to make a comeback during the race and move up to the front positions.

From the start, both TF109s experienced problems getting away. Jarno Trulli only made it through 2 corners before spinning out and causing the starting pile-up that left 4 cars stranded. Timo Glock, on the other hand, did not have an easy race and had to settle for a distant 10th position. Everyone at Toyota agrees that there is still a lot of work to be done.

Timo Glock – 10th:

I had a difficult race. At the start, the car didn’t start properly, I don’t know why but we need to analyze this because Jarno [Trulli] didn’t have a good start either. He was ahead of me in the first corner and I saw him spin. I got through the incident but then I was behind Nico [Rosberg] and I couldn’t get close enough to him to slipstream; every time I got close my tires started to deteriorate. Even when I had a clear track ahead of me today, the car wasn’t perfect so we need to see what happened and try to come back stronger for the next races.

Jarno Trulli – Retirement:

« It was a really frustrating day for me because I was optimistic, our strategy was good, and I would have been able to score big points. Unfortunately, my race didn’t last long. I had a bad start because the engine didn’t provide as much power as it should have, so I lost a few positions and was right behind Alonso and Rosberg going into the first corner. »

« Rosberg went wide and in the next corner he came back onto the track right in front of me. I had to avoid him because he was coming back really fast. I had to swerve off the track and lost control of the car on the grass, so I spun, and someone hit me. But it doesn’t matter anymore, now we have to focus on the next race where hopefully we can achieve a much better result. »

Tadashi Yamashina – Director:

« It was a disappointing race because we were hoping to score points and that was not the case. We hoped for a better performance this weekend but things did not go as we would have liked. The whole team made a great effort to bring aerodynamic updates to the package for this race, but in the end it was a frustrating weekend. We need to analyze the data when we return to Cologne and understand how we can improve. »

« Furthermore, it seems that Jarno and Timo had some problems at the start, so we need to analyze that as well. But we are not disheartened, we are going to work very hard in the coming days and we will fight for a better result in Monaco. »
