Liam Lawson steps onto familiar ground at Suzuka
The temporary replacement for Daniel Ricciardo arrives at the Suzuka circuit, which he knows by heart. Engaged in Super Formula, he has driven here several times. Liam Lawson hopes to achieve another great performance here after Singapore.
He gives an impression of ease. After only three Grand Prix, driving one of the worst cars on the grid, Liam Lawson collected his first points in Singapore. And all this on a track he was discovering. This weekend, at Suzuka, the New Zealander arrives on a familiar track.
(I) I’m looking forward to going to Suzuka, which I know quite well because I’m participating in the Super Formula championship this year. That means that I have done testing and races there multiple times and I love it. Obviously, since it is a Formula 1 circuit, the first time I drove there was a pretty cool experience. It is also a very iconic circuit. It’s more of an old-school track, with grass all around the track and little room for error, the AlphaTauri driver exclaims.
The opportunity to show oneself
Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement hopes to use this advantage and his knowledge of the track to achieve another strong performance and score more points. « I hope we can be strong there, and it’s useful to have a good understanding of the circuit. I expect it to be very different from Formula 1, but I’m excited to go there. I think in a Formula 1 car, it’s one of the best circuits to drive on. »
A good result in Japan could work in his favor. Currently without a seat for next season, the Red Bull family could grant him one at AlphaTauri. At the moment, no driver has been announced for the 2024 season at the Faenza team. The positions are being contested among Yuki Tsunoda, Daniel Ricciardo, and Liam Lawson.
In three races, Kiwi scored two points in the world championship, compared to three for Yuki Tsunoda over the entire season.
