De la Rosa will race next season for Campos GP

According to Spanish media, Pedro de la Rosa has reportedly signed a two-year contract with the new Formula 1 team Campos.

Pedro de la Rosa believes that his dream is coming true again, that is, driving a Formula 1 car. The McLaren test driver had not driven since the end of the 2006 season to cover for the absence of Juan Pablo Montoya.

As reported by the Spanish sports newspaper As, De la Rosa had been waiting a long time for a contract, remaining with McLaren-Mercedes as a test driver. A role which has significantly deteriorated since the 2009 regulations.

The 38-year-old Spaniard is expected to become the leader for the first years of the new Campos team. Indeed, the experience of the Spanish driver is a major asset for a new team. The proof is that Brawn GP decided to keep its two drivers from last year, and that Force India preferred Giancarlo Fisichella to a young rookie.

The car of the Spanish team is currently in the wind tunnel at Dallara and it will only be in mid-January that we’ll see the first test laps of the new team on a circuit.

De la Rosa will lead and drive for the tests. Predicting the second Campos driver today is practically impossible. The possibility of veteran Marc Géné could have been mentioned, but the team leaders prefer the contribution of a young driver rather than having both of their cars driven by highly experienced drivers.

Spanish media are also talking about Bruno Senna, still looking for a seat in Formula 1, and Sergio Perez, financially supported by the Mexican company Telmex, owned by a certain… Carlos Slim, the man who almost bought Honda last November!

The official announcement of Pedro de la Rosa’s seat will be made during the Grand Prix of Valencia on August 23rd.
