McLaren continues its harvest at Suzuka
The British team scored 33 points at the Japanese Grand Prix. For the first time this season, both drivers finished on the podium.
Behind the uncompromising Red Bull, it’s the team of the moment. Since the British Grand Prix, McLaren frequently plays at the forefront. Even ahead of Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin. The evolutions brought by the Woking-based brand have transformed the race car.
Since Silverstone, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri regularly compete for podium finishes. This was evident in the Japanese Grand Prix, where both men finished second and third.
« My start was good, I almost got Max, but Max is Max. So, I didn’t have much luck in turn number 2. I tried, but the pace was extremely strong today. We are not close to Max, but we are not miles away either, so it’s a very good day and also for Oscar [Piastri] because it’s his first podium », acknowledges Lando Norris, second.
In search of Aston Martin
On the other side of the garage, the young Australian continues to gain momentum. Even though he was overtaken by his teammate during the race, Oscar Piastri manages to seize every opportunity to make an impression.
« I cannot thank the team enough for giving me this opportunity. There aren’t many people in the world who have this opportunity in their entire life, and I managed to have it in my first season. It wasn’t my best race of all time, but it was enough to win a trophy in the end, so I’m super happy, (says the Australian).
Thanks to this double podium, McLaren is moving up in the constructors’ standings. With 33 points scored compared to four for Aston Martin, Zak Brown’s team is increasingly threatening Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Only 49 points separate the two teams, after Suzuka.
