Assessment: Brawn GP fares well despite a difficult Grand Prix

With 128 points, Brawn GP remains the leader in the constructors’ standings, despite Jenson Button’s first retirement following a collision, and despite Rubens Barrichello finishing in 7th place. Red Bull is still within a reasonable distance with 104.5 points.

Brawn GP could have lost much more during this Grand Prix, but in their misfortune, Red Bull didn’t take enough advantage of their rivals’ lack of performance. The suspense remains with 5 Grand Prix to go.

Jenson Button – Retirement:

I got a good start and managed to gain a few places in the first corners. I was on the outside of Heikki, and I wanted to turn into the next corner, but quite simply, Romain caught me with my rear wheel. That’s it for my race today. It’s frustrating because I had a lot of fuel onboard and was well positioned. But I prefer to retire here rather than when leading the race. We are determined to get back on track and be more competitive on circuits that should be good for our car.

Rubens Barrichello – 7th:

I must be happy with a seventh place and grabbing two points in a race like this. We could have taken more points, but my clutch issue at the start wiped out any chance of a podium, which is very frustrating for me. We changed my strategy to get me into the points, and it worked. The fuel leak during the last laps was quite concerning, but I managed to control the pace and keep my position. It was a great relief.

Ross Brawn – Team Principal:

« It was a disappointing race for us today, especially when we have the potential to succeed. Rubens faced difficulties, but we changed his strategy, and he drove very well from that point on. At the end, his car had an oil leak, and we asked him to conserve his engine and manage his race finish. Jenson had a good start from the 14th position and gained a few places before being hit from behind. There are important lessons we can learn from this weekend, and we are working hard at the factory for the last 5 races of the season. »
