The Brawns have achieved their first goal for this weekend. Both drivers reached the third part of qualifying and, most importantly, are ahead of the Red Bulls. The team is confident for tomorrow, especially considering the amounts of fuel loaded.
Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, qualified 5th and 6th respectively, have the heaviest cars among the top 10. Ross Brawn claims that both cars are on a one-stop strategy, which should allow them to contend for the podium and even victory.
Rubens Barrichello – 4th and 5th:
« It was probably one of my best qualifying laps at Monza and I’m really happy with myself. We had the potential to be on pole today, but strategically, we had to consider the race pace of the KERS cars as well as their start and so we put a good amount of fuel in the car and stayed focused on what was right for our race. I did a really good lap, considering my fuel load, and fifth is the best I could achieve like this. I’m really happy to have extracted all the potential from the car. It will be interesting to see the fuel loads but I’m confident we are in a good position. I love racing here so I’m really looking forward to the race tomorrow. »
Jenson Button – 2nd and 6th:
« I am really happy with my sixth position today. Rubens and I have been so close in lap times all weekend, and he finished only 0.15 seconds ahead of me, which is the difference between tucking your head into the cockpit or not. Obviously, I didn’t tuck enough! We got the most out of the car today, and we felt good with a heavy fuel load; it’s not just about qualifying because you have to consider your race. It has been a positive day, and I am confident we can have a good race. »
Ross Brawn – Team Principal:
« The qualifying session showed an excellent performance from Rubens, Jenson, and the team today, putting us in a good position for tomorrow’s race. Rubens and Jenson drove extremely well in Q3, with our one-stop strategy, to secure the 5th and 6th positions on the grid, and their lap times being very close to the others shows that they managed to get the most out of the car. We have most of the KERS-equipped cars right in front of us, promising our drivers a good start, and we have everything to succeed tomorrow. »
