Vettel: Our performances at Monza are not Renault’s fault

After finishing the Italian Grand Prix in eighth position, a blow to his title ambitions, Sebastian Vettel now has to deal with a 26-point deficit to the leader, Jenson Button. It’s a significant gap with four races remaining in the season, but Vettel is not someone who gives up easily. Despite Jenson Button’s advantage and the resurgence of Rubens Barrichello, the young German still has only one thing on his mind, the 2009 drivers’ crown…

In an interview for the official F1 website, Vettel reflects on Red Bull’s performance at Monza, where the Mercedes engine made a strong impression: «I think our performance at Monza is not the fault of the engine, but I wouldn’t be telling you anything new by saying that the Mercedes engine is an excellent engine. But we have to be fair to our partner Renault. They are doing their best and working tremendously hard.»

To be honest, we were very confident over the weekend. But in the end, we didn’t have the necessary speed. Monza doesn’t seem to be the best circuit for us, and we were lucky to take one point. But considering the results, with Brawn GP on top, it was a bad weekend for us.

Despite the difficulty of the task ahead, Vettel explains that he won’t give up so easily: From now on, our goal is victory in the last four races. We will take each race separately and won’t tally up the points until the end of the championship. A deficit of 26 points is a lot, it’s going to be difficult, but we will do our best.

And when asked who has the best chances of finishing as champion this year, his answer is clear: «I hope it will be me! I will fight until the last breath, until the last minute. With this delay, I know it won’t be easy, but we will see. Four drivers still have a chance to become champion. Some are better placed than others. It would really be a surprise to see Barrichello clinch the title. He is getting stronger but he is quite old. It must be really special for him, but it’s the same for all four of us. None of us has been champion before. We will see. »
