Even before the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix scandal broke, many were questioning Renault’s commitment to staying in F1. This unfortunate incident could have ended their involvement in the premier discipline of motorsport.
Finally, following the lenient decision made last Monday, the Renault team stated it had questioned whether to stay or not. Indeed, even though Enstone was cleared in the matter, the bad image this gives the group, along with the difficulties due to the financial crisis, could have prompted it to shut down.

The team has committed to setting up a control structure to prevent such a scandal from happening again. They stated that they never thought anyone in the team could concoct such a plan. Clearly, the conspirators acted against the interests of Renault and F1. The act of setting up a conspiracy is so far removed from the principles we instilled in them and so contrary to our interests that it cannot be attributed to Renault, they added.
