It is on this old 78-year-old circuit that the future British Grand Prix is supposed to be organized, scheduled from July 9 to 11 of next year. However, the track’s managers needed to make substantial modifications to its infrastructure. The work involved access and paddock facilities, as well as the circuit design, and completely resurfacing the track. These works, which started this year, are far from being completed and have been delayed due to poor planning and financial issues.
And Bernie Ecclestone has already understood that the circuit will likely not be ready in time to host the GP by 2010, even if the bosses can ensure the required financing. The management of Donington Park had until the end of this week to prove they had the financial means for the necessary infrastructure reconstruction to host Formula 1. The F1 supremo hinted that he hadn’t made his decision at this stage and would wait until Monday to decide. However, he admitted that he is now very pessimistic about Donington’s chances.
« It’s not good. Even if they get the money, I don’t see how they’ll be ready in time for 2010. It’s very disappointing because we thought they would be ready on time, but it doesn’t seem possible for them to catch up. They can still come to us saying they have the money, but there is no way to be sure that the circuit will be ready in time. It seems that we should start planning again, » said Bernie Ecclestone.
The Englishman had initially been adamant; Donington Park was the best option to secure the future of the British GP, but he has since indicated that Silverstone might possibly host the 2010 Grand Prix if Donington Park is not ready.
