Rubens Barrichello needs no introduction, as he is such a cornerstone of Formula 1, this driver who for years remained in the shadow of a certain Michael Schumacher, within the empire of the Scuderia. The Brazilian, after two dark years with Honda, found himself without a seat and on the verge of retirement at the end of 2007, like a farewell sign to the end of the Prost-Senna years. But the loyal servant of the seven-time world champion, after seeing his team withdraw for financial reasons, was called back by the man who knew him best in this field, named Ross Brawn.
Rubinho is having a great 2009 season with BrawnGP, despite not being certain of having a seat two months before the start of the Formula 1 season. The 37-year-old Brazilian is still in the fight for the world driver’s championship. Rubens Barrichello is the patriarch of the category, the one who remained the loyal lieutenant of the Red Baron for many years, finds himself in the title race against the pack of young prodigies in Formula 1, an opportunity he didn’t think would come again, but which has unexpectedly presented itself this year.
But today all the rumors suggest that he might be heading towards the end of his career at Williams as early as 2010. He will therefore meet Sir Frank Williams, perhaps the most respected man in the paddocks, after having known other charismatic team principals.
According to the Brazilian press, Rubens Barrichello has already signed his contract with the Williams F1 team for next year and will end his adventure with Brawn GP at the end of this season.
The driver is said to have already signed his contract with the team for 2010 with an option for 2011. The transfer is expected to be officially announced after the Interlagos GP in Brazil, or at the last round of the Formula 1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi.
Rubinho is expected to see his salary, currently estimated at 2 million dollars at Brawn GP, quadrupled at Williams, with a victory bonus. The Brazilian will experience his sixth team in his career with Williams, after Jordan, Stewart, Ferrari, Honda, and then Brawn GP. Barrichello, who has eleven wins in 285 Grand Prix, is set to begin the 18th season of his career alongside young GP2 champion, German Nico Hülkenberg.
