Mark Webber stated that he intends to do everything possible to achieve the best result for himself this weekend in Brazil, instead of supporting his teammate Sebastian Vettel in the title race.
The German driver needs at least one win and a second place in the last two races to stay in the fight and said yesterday that he expected Mark Webber to help him achieve these results if necessary. But when asked if there would be team orders at Interlagos, the Australian replied: « I doubt it. My guys are motivated for a good result, so we are going to try to get one. »
The Red Bull driver also believes that Jenson Button would be the most deserving champion among the three contenders, on the grounds that he has done the best job this year, even if there was an advantage with the car at the start.
« There is no one else who deserves it as much as he does. He has won more races than anyone else and he has made a lot of overtakes; the other guys haven’t done that. He has done many things to get himself out of very tricky situations in order to keep his championship alive, and I don’t think others have done that. » and adds, « Is Jenson the best driver in this field? That’s another question. Is he going to win the championship this year? Yes, and he deserves it. Is he the best driver on the grid? Was Damon Hill the best driver in 1996? The car is a very important factor. »
The Australian driver was also a title contender mid-season following his victory at the Nurburgring, but has not managed to score a point since Hungary. He feels a bit unlucky, although he admitted it was his fault at Suzuka where Sebastian Vettel dominated the race.
« The Suzuka race was really disappointing for me, it was my first big missed opportunity when the car was good and I wasn’t there. » Said Mark Webber. « It’s quite incredible that we haven’t scored a single point since Budapest. But we know why, there are a bunch of different reasons why we haven’t finished in the points in races. »
