Summary: Brawn GP wins the drivers’ and constructors’ titles

It was only a matter of time… and circumstances! Jenson Button, after a suspenseful race, becomes for the first time in his life, Formula 1 World Champion. The Briton didn’t need to perform a feat on the Interlagos circuit. Just secure it. And yet, Jenson Button, with a 5th place finish, did much more than that; he became world champion, securing at the same time the Constructors’ title for his team, Brawn GP.

Rubens Barrichello, then poleman, compromised all his chances after the second round of pit stops, where the Brazilian found himself behind Mark Webber and Robert Kubica. Ultimately, Barrichello had to return to the pit one last time to finish in 8th position.

Jenson Button – 5th:

«This was the greatest race of my career. Winning both titles here is simply fantastic. We deserve it so much after going through tough times this winter. This season has been marked by ups and downs. First the victories, then the important points to win the title. We must thank Norbert Haug and Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines for the engines they provided us with throughout the season. Without their commitment, we would never have been able to aspire to the final victory. I have so many people to thank that it would be too long to list them all. It’s truly a childhood dream come true. I’m planning a big crazy party tonight! »

Rubens Barrichello – 8th:

«While I’m obviously disappointed with today’s result, I have to be happy for Brawn GP. We really had a great car and a great team. I’m very happy for Jenson who is a friend, and a great champion. We really worked well together. Congratulations to him. It was a very intense battle between us, and he definitely won the title early in the season. We’re going to have a great evening together, and I’m very happy to have been able to contribute to winning this constructors’ title.»

Ross Brawn – Team Principal:

What a day! I am incredibly proud of the team, our drivers, and it is really very special to win both the driver title and the constructor title in the first year of Brawn GP. The second half of the season was more difficult than the first. Jenson is a fantastic driver, and he had a very good race today, especially after difficult qualifications the day before. He deserves the title. Rubens has helped us a lot in the perspective of the constructor title, and without him, we wouldn’t be here. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mercedes-Benz, who have been an admirable partner. And finally, I want to thank all the guys at the factory who worked really hard this winter and throughout the year.
