Jarno Trulli is very angry with Adrian Sutil. He accuses him of being guilty of a dangerous maneuver in the first lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix, which ended their race this Sunday. The incident occurred halfway through the first lap when the Italian was forced wide while trying to pass on the outside of the Force India driver who was battling with Kimi Räikkönen. The driver of the Japanese team, who was halfway on the grass, lost control of his Toyota and crashed into Adrian Sutil, ending their race. Fernando Alonso, who was completely innocent in the affair, couldn’t avoid the car of the young German driver.
Jarno Trulli confronted Adrian Sutil after the accident, in an altercation that involved a lot of shouting and gestures. The Italian driver was fined $10,000 (about half an hour’s wage) for his behavior. The stewards did not take any action against Adrian Sutil, considering the collision as a racing incident.
But the Toyota driver insists that the German drove in a very dangerous way: « I’m not angry about the result, I’m angry because of the maneuver which is extremely, extremely dangerous. We know that it is easy to make contact and he should have given me enough space not to have to go over the curbs. We were in sixth gear and we were lucky that no one got injured. »
He continued, “I thought I could pass Sutil, he was slower and I was coming with much higher speed. He went to the inside, so I went to the outside and we ended up side by side. There’s an onboard camera showing my front wheel next to his wheel, so if you look behind him, I’m not there.”
And insisted « He could say he drove on his line. Yes, but I’m on the line in this case. So, if you decide to stay inside, stay inside, don’t go outside while I’m there! The problem is that he sent me onto the curbs, and once I was there, I completely lost control of the car. And the fact that I hit him from behind was because once I was on the curbs, the car was unstable. I took off, then I hit him from behind, but just before, I was next to him. »
Jarno Trulli continued by stating that the accident was unacceptable and that he had been clear with Adrian Sutil, telling him that he was driving dangerously: « That’s why I was so bloody mad after I jumped out of the car. It can happen that we touch wheels, it’s a racing incident. But when someone acts willingly at that speed, it’s crazy and unacceptable. You can’t do that. It’s like a straight line and he pushed me onto the curbs and into the grass. I can’t accept any excuse, I’m sorry. It’s clear that in the Paddock no one should do that. »
