USF1 keeps an eye on Kyle Busch

The sporting director of USF1, Peter Windsor, has taken a liking to Kyle Busch. In an interview with USA Today, he says he keeps himself informed about the American driver on a practically daily basis. Peter Windsor would like to eliminate the “practically” from his thoughts for 2011.

“If he wants to drive for us in 2011, we will certainly be very receptive to it,” said Peter Windsor. “I think there will be a lot of speculation about this over time. […] We are set out to do a good job. I know when Kyle [Busch] plans to come see us, and I’m quite certain we will impress him.”

Kyle Busch shows a certain interest. Peter Windsor claims he has met with the entourage managing the driver’s affairs after being contacted by him regarding USF1. Although he has not yet met Kyle Busch in person, Peter Windsor is convinced that the man with 58 victories in the various Nascar categories to date, has the necessary talent to transition from Stock Cars to single-seaters.

“I’ve observed him quite a bit and I have a lot of respect for him,” says Windsor. “I know people close to Kyle [Busch]. I think he is capable of winning a Formula 1 World Championship. I think he has the talent and the right approach. I would love to see him in a Formula 1 car. If he wants to jump in one of our cars next year for some demonstrations here in the United States, he will obviously be welcome.”

Kyle Busch currently has a contract with Joe Gibbs Racing that expires at the end of 2010, and there is no indication of his intentions at the moment. However, the American driver mentioned shortly after the launch of USF1 last February that he was interested in the F1 championship. “It’s obviously something I’m not ruling out,” Kyle Busch stated. “If I could win the (Nascar) championship in the next two or three years, then I’d be keen to go do F1 for a few seasons and come back. I think I would still be young enough, if I won the Nascar championship at 25, to drive in F1 for a few seasons and return to Nascar at 28.”

Peter Windsor and USF1’s dream is to have an all-American driver lineup, but this dream will not come true for their first season in 2010. Peter Windsor was still hoping around ten days ago to find at least one American driver, but few possess the required ticket to compete in Formula 1, a super license.

« We will try to have the best possible drivers for 2010, » adds Windsor, « and that’s all I can say because no American driver, unfortunately, is eligible in F1 from an administrative standpoint. » The super license is automatically granted to any driver winning an international championship, but: « no American has done so in the last 12 months. »
