Freshly elected, the new FIA President has asked the board of directors to reunify in the coming days. After a bitter battle with his rival Ari Vatanen, the last days of the electoral contest were marred by threats of legal action, as well as suggestions of unfair pressure. The Frenchman stated that he hoped even those who voted against him can now envision a future in which all FIA members will work together.
Speaking at a conference following the election results, Jean Todt stated: « I love taking action, I want things to move forward. I am really happy to see so many countries supporting me, but there is still much to be done. Now that the election is over, everyone must share the same goals, including those who did not support me. I will not close the door to anyone. »
Jean Todt explained that he will appoint commissioners to each of the FIA World Championships. He even hinted that his friend Michael Schumacher could get a role on the Board of Directors. « I want to appoint commissioners because I do not intend to run Formula 1 as the first person. I don’t want to underestimate the problems. Success in my career has always been about having the right people in my teams. »
Speaking about Michael Schumacher, he added: « He is like a son. There has always been a place for him beside me and there always will be. »
Jean Todt was praised by the outgoing president, Max Mosley, who was sure that the FIA could now only expect a bright future. « I am pleased with the result of the vote because the FIA is in very good hands. Jean Todt is truly capable of managing the tasks at hand; he is a very honest and straightforward man. We couldn’t have had anyone better. »
With complete confidence in Jean Todt, the former president stated that there was no suggestion for him to maintain influence over the Board of Directors. « It’s a relief, as you never stop working in that position. You’re always worried when incidents occur. It was a good time for me to leave. I’m going to take a vacation and then we’ll see. As they say, idle hands are the devil’s workshop. » concluded Mr. Mosley.
