Ecclestone made an offer to Silverstone

As the organizers of Donnington Park desperately cling to the project of hosting the 2010 British Grand Prix, Autosport reveals that negotiations between Silverstone and Bernie Ecclestone are already underway.

The chances of seeing Donnington Park host the British GP as early as next year are now almost reduced to nothing. The organizers have until Monday at 12 p.m. to prove their financial solidity, but it appears that Bernie Ecclestone has already entered into dialogue with the owners of Silverstone.

But although these talks began several weeks ago, when it became clear that the Donnington Park project would not be completed in time, there is no indication that a deal will indeed be concluded.

Bernie Ecclestone had declared he was ready to offer a 17-year contract, similar to the one made with Donnington, if he were to turn to Silverstone. However, sources indicate that the contract proposed by the FOM is similar to the one Silverstone rejected 18 months ago. This means that Donnington Park remains the priority for Bernie Ecclestone.

Damon Hill, the president of the British Racing Drivers Club, had stated his desire for a long-term contract between Silverstone and Bernie Ecclestone’s FOM. The BRDC will only be inclined to sign a contract if it is financially viable.

Autosport claims that a source close to the discussions revealed: «Silverstone is ready, but so far, no viable contract has been offered to us.»
