The Toro Rosso team did not deserve to be without points for its last race this Sunday in Abu Dhabi. Despite the retirement of young Alguersuari due to a broken gearbox, which caused total confusion in the pits as his team wasn’t informed, Sébastien Buemi managed to score points once again. This is the second consecutive time the Swiss driver has scored a point. He finishes the 2009 season brilliantly, a season that saw him grow.
The Swiss driver delivered a solid race and enjoyed a great battle with Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica. Franz Tost’s team and the drivers are eagerly anticipating 2010 and hope to start where they left off. That is, in the middle of the pack.
Sébastien Buemi – 8th:
« Getting another point today, after also scoring in Brazil, is a great way to end the season. The whole team has done an excellent job over the last four races, and I’m looking forward to next year. At the beginning, I struggled to keep up with Rosberg, but I gained more and more speed as the race went on. I lost some time behind Nakajima, but overall I think I did my best today, and it was a great race. My battle with Robert [Kubica] was completely fair. I think I gave him enough room, but he still made a mistake. »
Jaime Alguersuari – Retirement:
« My start wasn’t too bad, but I found myself a bit stuck and on the first lap, I made a mistake at turn 19 by losing the rear of the car and then I went into the grass. Then when I got back on track, I had lost a few places. And later, I had to stop because of a gearbox problem, so I decided to come in, but there was a misunderstanding because I entered the pits and my team wasn’t expecting me. »
Franz Tost – Director:
« Sébastien [Buemi] at the wheel of his best race of the season, got off to a good start and after the strategy chosen by the team also worked well to get ahead of Rosberg. His battle with Kubica was an important and exciting moment. His lap times were very fast and Sébastien delivered a very good performance. Unfortunately, we had a gearbox problem on Jaime’s car when two gears engaged at the same time and broke the mechanism. Now, I hope we can build a good car for next year and start in Bahrain where we left off today. »
