The FIA checks the compliance of the McLaren MP4/25

McLaren Mercedes is at the center of a new technical controversy at the start of this season with its rear wing, but the team did not hesitate to invite Charlie Whiting, FIA technical director, to inspect the wing of the MP4/25.

In recent days, it was Red Bull’s director, Christian Horner, who insisted that his team and Ferrari asked the FIA to validate or not the technical compliance of the incriminated part. This wing, which is partially movable, could theoretically provide a significant advantage in terms of top speed, in the order of 10 km/h.

McLaren indicated that only Red Bull made this observation. « We spoke to Ferrari and they were not aware of any protest. » informed a team spokesperson.

Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren’s director, stated that his team has remained in contact with the FIA over the past few months to ensure that the design of the rear wing fully complies with the regulations.

“The wing is different and innovative, yes,” declared Whitmarsh. “But we have been in contact with Charlie for several months to ensure we were complying with the rules. We were assured that it was.”

McLaren topped three pre-season testing sessions this winter with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
