Felipe Massa specified that he did not need glasses to compete in F1 races. This subject has been brought up a few times since his accident last summer when a spring from Barrichello’s Brawn GP hit his helmet head-on in Hungary. However, information provided since then by the medical staff indicated that the Brazilian’s vision had completely returned to normal by the end of 2009.
However, the rumor gained traction again in recent weeks when the 28-year-old Ferrari driver was seen wearing glasses at night while driving his personal car. Massa had to provide explanations on the matter and clarify the situation.
I just have slight myopia, so I only wear glasses when I drive at night and when I watch TV. I prefer it to better read what’s written on the screen. But for racing, even at night, it’s OK, stated the Brazilian during a video chat on Ferrari’s official website.
His accident during qualifying at the Hungaroring had left him in a coma for a short time and forced him to stay bedridden for two weeks, after which some information emerged about his ability to see clearly. Since then, the Brazilian has done some karting races in Brazil and actively participated in winter testing with eight days of driving the F10.
