The officials responsible for the Monza circuit have secured an extension to keep the Formula 1 Grand Prix until 2016 – despite fears that Rome might obtain the event.
Bernie Ecclestone openly talked about plans to hold a street circuit in Rome, possibly as early as 2013, in a move that would have ended the long tradition of the Monza circuit whose contract was expiring in 2012.
However, a few days after Ecclestone spoke about Rome, Monza officials confirmed that they had renewed their contract to keep the race until 2016 – with the possibility of extending it even further.
The new contract therefore ensures Monza the exclusivity of the Italian Grand Prix for the next 6 seasons. However, a race is still under consideration in Rome to potentially host the European Grand Prix, replacing Valencia.
As a reminder, Monza is the circuit that has hosted the most Formula 1 Grand Prix and has been absent from the calendar only once (in 1980) since the creation of the World Championship in 1950.
