Jenson Button has concerns about the delayed start of the Australian Grand Prix, which will see drivers finish the race in the setting sun of Melbourne.
The race will start at 5 p.m. local time and could finish at 7 p.m. The delayed starts were introduced last year to boost television audiences in Europe. Some drivers had criticized this measure, particularly due to the lack of visibility when the sun’s rays are very low.
Button, winner last year in Melbourne, has a few doubts: « It seems unimportant, but it is not. It can be dangerous if you have the sun in your eyes; you can’t see where you’re going, » stated the world champion in an interview with Reuters.
But I prefer running during the day, even a race at twilight for me, I prefer that to a night race. Being in front of the pack during the race is not a bad place at twilight, so I hope we can be in the same position and we won’t have to worry.
Realistic, Button believes McLaren will be able to fight for the podium and is cautious about the speeds shown by the teams during the inaugural Bahrain race.
I think Red Bull is very strong, I think Ferrari is very strong, and then it’s probably us. But I hope that with the change of circuit and with some small updates, we will be closer to them and maybe even challenge them.
With Button and Hamilton, McLaren has in its ranks the last two winners of the Australian Grand Prix.
