The chief financial officer of Formula 1, Bernie Ecclestone, is convinced that the Korean Grand Prix will take place this year, despite doubts about the event surfacing earlier this week. A report in the German magazine Focus suggested that the German designer Hermann Tilke was not certain that the new circuit would be ready for its inaugural Grand Prix on October 24.
Ecclestone also said he is certain the site will be ready after taking a lap around the track before heading to China. “I am absolutely sure of it,” he told Reuters when asked if he expected the track to be ready on time. “I have no doubt.”
He also wanted to clarify that Tilke never said the site might not be ready in time. « I spoke to him and he denies having said that. »
Bernie Ecclestone also revealed that the Russian city of Sochi, which will host the 2014 Winter Olympics, was in the running to host the inaugural Grand Prix of the country in the coming years. « We have 2 or 3 sites in Russia that we are discussing with. »
