The Bahrain Grand Prix could be canceled!
This week we will know more about the fate of the Bahrain Grand Prix, which has been only removed from the calendar, with a view to being moved to the end of the season, due to the country's political issues.
It is possible that the 2011 Formula 1 season could take a new turn following the announcement from Turkey. Indeed, Bahraini activists have expressed in an “open letter” addressed to Bernie Ecclestone, published on the social network Facebook, that they wish to have the Grand Prix canceled.
« We are sending you this open letter regarding the organization of the Bahrain Grand Prix, and we, the citizens of Bahrain and human rights defenders around the world, ask you to consider the challenges of organizing what should be a happy sporting event in the midst of a country under martial law, surrounded by tanks and military forces, while the population is silenced, killed, and tortured.
Without mentioning the difficult climatic conditions, organizing a motorsport event in the midst of a despotic repression of the population would not be well understood and accepted worldwide. Therefore, as a show of support for the people of Bahrain, we ask you to reconsider holding the Bahrain Grand Prix until human rights and freedom are restored and, if you wish, to publish a letter stating that the Grand Prix cannot and will not be held in Bahrain until human rights and freedom are restored and the repression has ended.
«With your permission, we are publishing this letter of support on Facebook and other networks to show the solidarity of the Formula 1 sports industry towards the democratic and freedom aspirations of the Bahraini people! We thank you very much for your support and hope to see the Bahrain Grand Prix return soon, in a free and democratic environment to which you would have contributed. »
In the meantime, we will need to be patient to know the verdict regarding Sakhir, which will be announced in 6 days (Sunday, May 1st).
