It’s not really a surprise, but it’s now official: F1 cars will indeed be powered by a 1.6L turbo V6 starting in 2014. The World Motor Sport Council of the International Federation voted yesterday to approve the proposal made by the engine manufacturers last week.
« After a vote by its members via fax, the World Motor Sport Council has ratified the engine regulations recently implemented in consultation with the main players in F1. The new engine will be a 1.6L V6 turbo with an energy recovery system. This new formula will come into effect at the start of the 2014 Formula One World Championship, » stated the FIA via a press release published on its official website.
Last unknown, the engine speed. The four-cylinder engine planned for 2013 was supposed to be limited to 12,000 RPM, but manufacturers would like to see a limit of 15,000 or even 16,000 RPM, while Grand Prix organizers would like the engine speed to remain fixed at 18,000 as we explained to you earlier this week.
