In Enstone, amidst the lush greenery of Oxfordshire, we want to introduce you a little more closely to some of the staff members who make Lotus Renault GP what it is. The first on the list is Cary Kravets, a junior mechanical designer, who has been part of the team for 18 months.
American, Cary Kravets arrived in Enstone a year and a half ago, having just graduated from Oxford Brookes with a Master’s in motorsport engineering. He is now part of the mechanical design group.
“The F1 seemed like an untouchable thing,” explains Cary enthusiastically, “…about two hundred engineers in the world have the chance to go to the races to make these cars run. We are all part of something special.”
Cary certainly looks at things with the perspective of someone discovering. Despite being one of the new faces at Enstone, he has already worked on the oil tank, the fuel tank, and the steering wheel. While other team members are assigned to specific tasks, his junior position means he doesn’t have a specialization yet. So far, he says he particularly enjoyed working on the steering wheel: “It’s kind of the glorious part. I got to work with the drivers to ensure each steering wheel met their demands.”
Cary hones his skills through discussions with more experienced team members, not only in the design office but also in the construction workshop, with mechanics and operators. They are very open, they welcome me kindly, they are willing to chat and answer questions like ‘how did you make this part?’
It’s an incredible opportunity. I love the way everything moves quickly and this incessant development. We release a new wing almost every race, with constant innovations. You design a part and the following weekend it’s operational on the car. In no other industry do you find such responsiveness, with so much speed of execution. It’s a joy to create something you can hold in your hands so quickly.
