Objective Q1 for Alguersuari
The Spaniard prefers to keep a set of new tires rather than go into Q2.
After Q2, it is not uncommon to see a driver stay in the pit during Q3 to preserve a set of new tires for the race the next day. This philosophy is also applied at the lower end of the standings.
Thus, on the sidelines of the German Grand Prix to be held this weekend at the Nürburgring, Jaime Alguersuari states that he hopes to qualify poorly on Saturday afternoon. Regularly qualifying in Q2 during the first five Grand Prix, except for Monaco where the Spaniard was 20th at the end of the qualifications, Alguersuari has not scored a single point while Buemi had eight before arriving in Canada.
But since Canada precisely, Alguersuari has systematically found himself stuck in the first part of qualifying in 18th position and has each time been able to enter the points the next day. The secret? This 18th place allowed him to preserve a set of tires for Sunday’s race. He hopes to do the same this weekend.
« I wouldn’t mind not going to Q2 in qualifying and qualifying 18th at the Nürburgring. That way I preserve a set of tires, » declared the Toro Rosso driver to Radio Nacional de España. « I’d rather not qualify, have a good race, and finish in the points. »
In three Grand Prix, Alguersuari has caught up with his teammate and now he is the one with the most points in the championship – nine compared to eight for Buemi.
