The FIA unveils the DRS zone of the Nürburgring
As at Silverstone, the drivers will only have one activation zone to sink their teeth into.
The race director, Charlie Whiting, has revealed the Drag Reduction System (DRS) activation zone for the German Grand Prix, taking place this Sunday at the Nürburgring. As in Silverstone, drivers will have only one activation zone, located at the exit of the Warsteiner Kurve (turn 11) and extending to the braking area of NGK Chicane (turn 13).
To be able to use DRS, the chasing driver must be within one second of the driver ahead at the entrance of turn 10, which is located just after the fast Schumacher S.
« The DRS zone has been established in the straight before the narrow chicane, so we should see some great overtaking. There’s always action at the first corner, a nice and wide corner with a variety of possible trajectories that give drivers good overtaking opportunities, » explains Charlie Whiting.
This DRS zone is reminiscent, in terms of its length and configuration, of the one established earlier this season at the Istanbul circuit, where overtaking was considered too easy for some.
In Great Britain, the situation of the DRS zone had been criticized by some drivers like Vitaly Petrov, and during the race, the effectiveness of this overtaking aid had been quite relative, mainly allowing the chasing driver to maintain contact with his predecessor to overtake on the old pit straight leading to Copse.
